Seminar in an honor of prof. Černohorský

The seminar filled, with lectures and reminiscences commemorated, this year's 99th birthday of Martin Černohorský, emeritus professor of physics at the Faculty of Science and emeritus rector of the Silesian University in Opava. The seminar was jointly organized by three physics departments of our faculty and the Brno branch of the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists. Professor Černohorský devoted himself to teaching and scientific activities for three-quarters of a century.

"Countless students attended seminars, courses, and lectures from prof. Černohorský in the years of his active teaching career. Many of his students became teachers, spreading the essence of his renowned pedagogical-physics seminars. These famous seminars acted as an unofficial Černohorský physics Brno school," says Roman Šimon Hilscher, vice dean of the Faculty of Science.

Next to his pedagogical contributions, the attendees recalled his credits for establishing and developing the Silesian University in Opava. Prof. Černohorský was the first dean of the Silesian University in Opava between 1992 and 1998. He also contributed to establishing the Czech rector conference. This platform followed up on the Club of Czech and Slovak Rectors and prof. Černohorský was also its first chancellor.

After his return to Brno, prof. Černohoský engaged in the propagation of the physics field. In 2005, he helped organize a symposium and a reveal of a memorial plaque in honor of famous Brno-born theoretical physicist Georg Placzek. It resulted in creating a unique scholarship program in the name of Georg Placzek for physics students. The name 'Cernohorsky' also now possesses a planetoid No.5268.

Prof. Černohoský gave a financial donation to the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists, and a Martin Černohorský Award for contribution to physical education was set up. You can nominate yourselves or others till December 31st, 2022. You can find more information here (czech only).
