Masaryk University offers a number of scholarships to its students. Don't live in Brno? Do you have excellent academic results? Are you going to Erasmus+ abroad? Are you preparing a student activity? You may be eligible for one of the scholarships. You can find more information about the possibilities and conditions of each scholarship here.

Below is a selection of scholarships, competitions, or grants suitable for physics students but not funded by Masaryk University. Some are intended for beginning students, others for graduate students or PhD students and young scientists.

The Werner von Siemens Prize 2024 is intended for students, teachers and scientists working in the fields of engineering and science in the Czech Republic. The prize will be awarded for the 27th time. The winner can be recommended by the general public - anyone from employees, students, parents, etc. If the nominee wins, he or she receives a recommendation award of CZK 10,000.

The prize is awarded in seven categories: The best basic research result, The best diploma thesis, The best dissertation thesis, The best teacher, Special awards from Siemens company director to the excellent quality of women science work, The best thesis on the topic of Industry 4.0, The best thesis on Smart infrastructure and energetics.

The Institute of Physics of the CAS organizes the constest for Physics Photo of 2024. The annual competition is dedicated this year to the topic of transformation. The photography competition ends with a ceremony announcing the winners and an exhibition of the awarded and selected images during the Czech European Researchers' Night, which is organized by the institution in the premises of the Na Slovance campus, Prague, on Friday 27 September 2024.

The Ústí Region offers financial support through a scholarship for teacher training students for CZK 50,000 per year, possibly repeating it up to a total of CZK 250,000 in subsequent years. The scholarship is intended for full-time students who are permanent residents of the Czech Republic. Students must study in programs focusing on electrical engineering, chemistry, psychology, construction, engineering, technology, materials, general education subjects (mathematics, physics, etc.), special education, and speech therapy.

 Students applying for the scholarship commit to taking up a position as teaching staff in a primary or secondary school or another educational institution in the Ústí Region for the number of years the scholarship was granted after finishing their studies.

Applications for the scholarship must be submitted by 30 September 2024 at Ústí Region webpages (Czech only).

2024 George Placzek Scholarship is announced by the Brno branch of the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists in cooperation with the Placzek Family Foundation (USA) and DELONG INSTRUMENTS a.s. The scholarship is for promising young physicists graduating high school in 2024 who have been accepted to study physics at a university anywhere in the world, including the Czech Republic.

So, have you just started studying physics at university? Do you have achievements in mathematics or physics olympics or experience in the field of physics popularization? Are you able to write a short popularization text about this discipline? The George Placzek Scholarship aims to you. The scholarship, worth a total of USD 3 000 (USD 1 000 per academic year), will be paid for three years (equivalent to the normal length of an bachelor degree).

Submit your diploma thesis to the CRYTUR 2024 competition! The conditions are the topic of the thesis in material sciences and the thesis submission for the defense from October 1st, 2023, till September 30th, 2024. The prize is money for the student and his supervisor. Last year, there were 43 submitted theses and in 2022, there were 56 competing theses. The organizer is the CRYTUR company in Turnov. The company deals with optoelectronics and hi-tech industrial applications. A submitted thesis can be written in Czech, Slovak, or English.

2023 Government's Awards for Talented Students
The Council for Research, Development and Innovations announces a call for nominations for the Government's awards for talented students. The award is given to those who have shown talent and interest in research or scientific work. The award can be given only to recognize outstanding research, experimental development and innovation.

Brno Ph.D. Talent is a competition for students of doctoral study programmes that offers long-term financial support and career development support to 25 talented doctoral students in the form of a scholarship of CZK 100,000 per year for three years. The competition is funded by the Brno City Council and administered by the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility. The experiences of previous successful applicants from physics can be found here.

Are you a full-time student in science or technology and under 32 years old? Apply! The application includes a professional CV, a description of the research project, professional background, and must be in English. Registration is open from 5 to 24 September 2024.

Support for outstanding master theses

The Rector of Masaryk University announces a competition of the MU Grant Agency for a project from the Student Research Support Programme. The competition is open to students of Master's degree programmes according to the criteria in the directive (Article 3.2) - only in czech.

Firma ThermoFisher Scientific and Czechoslovak Microscopy Society (CSMS) announced annual calls for a two-year fellowship program for a young scientist (up to 35 years old - exception is the length of maternity/parental leave) or Ph.D. student in the total amount of 200 000 CZK. The fellowship program is for those who in their work use electron/ion microscopy or directly work with results obtained by electron microscopy, XPS, μCTnanoCT.

Female students of STEM disciplines (S - Science, T - Technology, E - Engineering, M - Math) can submit their bachelor theses to the SHE STEM AWARD competition. Applications are now open on the website sheaward.cz. The winner will also receive expert guidance and will have the opportunity to present their work at the WE Local Conference 2024. Female students can apply by sending their undergraduate theses completed between October 2022 and September 2023.

The Start Your Business competition is a good opportunity to test your business plan or just to test your skills and compare them with others. With feedback, experts will help refine ideas and there is a cash prize for the most successful students.

Taiwan Semiconductor Scholarship Program

The prestigious scholarship to one of the five Taiwanese universities is intended for Polish, Slovak, Lithuanian and Czech students in fields related to semiconductors and nanotechnology. During the internships, the scholarship holders can personally get acquainted with the environment of companies involved in the development and production of the latest Apple M2 chips. The program is accompanied by a fairly high monthly stipend, travel to and from Taiwan and all tuition fees are covered. The maximum duration of stay for Master's students is 2 years and for PhD students a maximum of 4 years.
