Atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment for organic thin film processing on float and flexible glass
Thin films based on organic chemistry are easy to process thanks to their solubility and flexibility, which is beneficial for implementation into mass production. Organic-based nanolayers are successfully used in optical and electronic devices, where ultra-thin flexible glass (UTFG) is a promising substrate and packaging material. Unfortunately, handling the UTFG is a challenging task due to its low weight and high fragility. Moreover, UTFG has lower surface energy than common float glass, which hinders the coating process.
The present study compares various atmospheric-pressure (AP) plasma sources as cold, dry and contactless tools for pre- and post- treatment in processing of organic thin films on glass surfaces. AP plasma cleaning and activation was tested on UTFG before deposition of the organic conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS using spin- and spray- coating techniques. Additionally, AP plasma decomposition of stearic acid nanolayers were studied with focus on their thickness in the scope of the top-down approach employed in the nanostructured thin films manufacturing.
The lecture presents the results achieved during an internship at INNOVENT e. V. Technology Development, an industrial research institute in Jena, Germany.
