26th ESCAMPIG 2024

The 26th ESCAMPIG conference on the physics of ionized gases organized by the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology, CEPLANT center, and the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists was successfully held at the FIT BUT in Božetěchova in Brno. 191 participants from 26 countries from all over the world attended the conference.

The GRBBeta satellite is heading to space. Data from the satellite will be analysed by physicists from Masaryk University

Signals from the GRBBeta CubeSat, which will be launched by the European Space Agency's Ariane 6 rocket, will also be closely monitored by astrophysicists from Masaryk University. They have been instrumental in the preparation of the project and will analyse data from the gamma-ray burst detector on board of the satellite. The scientists will also test the smallest astrophysical camera in space, LuvCAM, which is sensitive to the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. The Ariane 6 rocket is scheduled to launch from Kourou in French Guiana on Tuesday 9 July 2024 between 20:00 and 23:00 CEST.

Unique patented technology for water purification

Scientists from the Applied Plasmochemistry research group of the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology have collaborated to develop a unique hydrodynamic cavitation nozzle that treats water with plasma in unprecedented quantities with high energy efficiency. This technology is suitable for industrial applications.

Ceremonial appointment of new associate professors at physics

Ondřej Caha from the Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Jaroslav Hnilica from the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology as new associate professors ceremonially received their appointment decrees. The MU Rector Martin Bareš personally handed them the decrees in the refectory of the Augustinian Abbey on Mendel Square.

Dušan Kováčik's visit at Laval Université in Canada

The leader of the Plasma Nanotechnologies and Bioapplications research group, Dušan Kováčik visits Laval Université in Québec, Canada. His trip aims to support the developing scientific cooperation with Prof. Gaetan Laroche's research group.

Dean's Awards 2024

Tomáš Kašparovský, the dean of the Faculty of Science, awarded the best students of the Faculty of Science MU. From the physics studies, Bc. Marianna Dafčíková, Mgr. Daniel Jadlovský and Mgr. Lukáš Kusýn, Ph.D. received the award.

Joint experiments with french colleague Simon Dap

Simon Dap from Toulouse, France, joined the scientists of the Plasma Diagnostics and Modelling research group. Simon Dap is a researcher at the Laboratoire LAPLACE, Université Paul Sabatier, and works on atmospheric pressure discharge physics and optical diagnostics.

Zdeněk Bochníček won the Martin Černohorský's Award

JČMF bestows the Martin Černohorský's Award for those who significantly contributed to physics education. This prize in honor of the distinguished professor Martin Černohorský was awarded only for the second time. This year's first prize goes to Assoc. Prof. Zdeněk Bochníček, a Vice-Dean for Teacher Programmes at the Faculty of Science of MUNI and the head of the section Didactics of Physics, Department of Plasma Physics and Technology.

Rector's awards 2024

On the occasion of the Dies academicus, the Rector awarded important personalities, scientists, and successful students in various categories. This year, the Rector's Award in physics for outstanding students of MU doctoral study programs was awarded to Július Vida. Congratulations!

Astronomers measure the rotation of a supermassive black hole for the first time

Astronomers have for the first time measured the rotation of a supermassive black hole using the wobbling of gaseous material from a disintegrated star. The results, obtained by an international team of scientists, offer a new way to study supermassive black holes and their evolution in the Universe. One of the lead authors of the study published in the prestigious journal Nature was Michal Zajaček from the Masaryk University, Faculty of Science.

Dr. Jakub Kelar as an invited scholar at Laval Université in Quebéc

Last year, Jakub Kelar became an invited researcher at Laval Université in Canada. He accepted the invitation of Prof. Gaétan Laroche to join their research. This year, he has gone to Canada again, works on multiple projects, and collaborates with students in teaching.

Astrophysicist Tereza Jeřábková wins MASH grant

Researcher Tereza Jeřábková has been awarded a MUNI Award in Science and Humanities (MASH) by the MU Grant Agency. Jeřábková has spent the last several years abroad. She is the first female recipient of a MASH grant. She will work on her research, which is focused on understanding how stars develop in different environments, at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

Top scientists from the STARMUS festival will visit students in Brno

Prominent scientists and personalities of the STARMUS science, art and music festival, Joel Parker and Damia Barcelo, will visit Brno for a day as part of the festival programme. On Wednesday, 15 May 2024, two unique lectures will take place at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University, introducing the audience to the latest space missions or the issue of microplastics in the environment.

Physicists verified the existence of a phenomenon that will help in the chip production

Take an altermagnet, put it under an x-ray machine, change the polarizing filter and watch the material absorb the light. It sounds like an experiment from a physics class, but in fact it is a groundbreaking experiment that lead to a remarkable discovery by physicists from Masaryk University, the Czech Academy of Sciences, Osaka Metropolitan University and the University of Nottingham.

New optional course: 3D printing in practice

F3410 – 3D printing in practice is a new course of Assoc. Prof. Pavel Slavíček and Dr. Vlasta Štěpánová. It aims to introduce to students the 3D printing and its use in practice, for example in the laboratory or in teaching.

2024 Earth Day

At Earth Day 2024 in the Botanical Garden, the Department of Plasma Physics and Technology and the CEPLANT Centre represent physics. The Botanical Garden organizes this event every year. This year's topic was plant protection. Hundreds of people, both adults and children, came to the event.

The Heart of Europe workshop is a traditional gathering of scientists dealing with thin films. The center of Europe is presented by the Technical University of Vienna, Masaryk University in Brno, and Comenius University in Bratislava.
